The Daily Basics (review of Confessions, Rude Awakenings, & Sex and the Austen Girl
Have you ever given any thought to why Jane Austen’s popularity never seems to wane but only increases as time goes on? After all, take a look at all the new books that continue to play off the themes she established way back in the early 1800’s. Okay, like every other Austenphile, we can have debates and discussions as to why she has become a cult, but the fact of the matter is this – Jane Austen’s style, books and characters make us feel happy. We like to read her. We like her prose, her stories and the feelings she evokes about the simpler, sweeter time she depicts.
So, it just stands to reason that we want more. Right? More Jane Austen. Well, she’s dead, so that’s not going to happen. However, there are some very clever people out there, author Laurie Viera Rigler for one, who have given a new twist to the time period we have grown to know and love from our beloved Jane. What’s so different? Rigler has taken a gal, Courtney Stone, from today and switched her in time with a lady, Jane Mansfield, from Regency England. Courtney discovers what it is like to live without indoor plumbing, hair dryers, cars, computers or even (ugh) toilet paper and Jane discovers the reverse. Two ladies experiencing culture shock.
Besides the books being totally delightful and fabulous reads, Rigler and Babelgum (a media video network) have married up on a truly remarkable idea. They’ve produced 20 2-3 minute episodes starring the two swapped ladies. You actually meet Courtney and Jane as characters without the story being revealed. Brilliant, charming and absolutely intriguing!
You can find this original Babelgum Series here or on it’s own YouTube Channel, Jane Austen Addict. Here is the introductory show that you simple MUST watch.
The series premiered on June 7. 2010 and will run for 20 shows. Each show airs on Babelgum on Mondays at 8 pm and stays on the site forever. The shows only last a few minutes, but what a few minutes they are! Check it out…. NOW! Oh, and get the books.
Both of them.
