After blowing up her career as a Special Agent in the US Diplomatic Security Services, Alex retreats to Vienna, Austria in disgrace, hoping to reconnect with the carefree student she was when she lived there fifteen years ago with her British-American diplomat dad. Instead she gets roped into investigating the murder of an American expat on the down low and ends up dodging bullets, sidelined by the real cops, and wondering why she's chasing her past when the cybercrime hacker on her team knows just what she needs right now.

 

Meanwhile, the closer Alex gets to the truth, the clearer it is that something is off about this assignment. Her hunt for a killer lands her in a firestorm of dark histories, star-crossed lovers, and staggering realizations that not only turn the case on its head, but also everything she ever thought she wanted.
