INTOLERABLE STUPIDITY

JANE AUSTEN MADE ME DO IT is an anthology of Austen-inspired fiction by such novelists as Adriana Trigiani, Stephanie Barron, Lauren Willig, Alexandra Potter, and many more, including Laurie Viera Rigler whose original short story bookends the anthology. JANE AUSTEN MADE ME DO IT was edited by Laurel Ann Nattress of Austenprose.

In her wildly entertaining contribution INTOLERABLE STUPIDITY -- eventually to be expanded into a full-length novel -- Laurie Viera Rigler weaves a meta-storyworld out of elements and characters from Pride & Prejudice.

"The gentleman or lady who has not pleasure in a good novel must be intolerably stupid"—Jane Austen

Welcome to a world where fictional characters have very real lives, and special librarians control portals to the world of those characters. Only a thin wall of rippling whiteness stands between our worlds, yet few believe that any of it is true. After all, if the hero of our favorite novel were to appear right before us, most of us—including said hero--would deny it. For who would believe that his life is a fiction? Or that characters are as real as you and I?

Take metafictional time travel, add murder, a bit of courtroom drama, a dash of romantic comedy, and you've got the first in a series in which two young attorneys and their favorite fictional characters cross over between the real world and the world of novels to seek justice, find true love, and make utter fools of themselves.

Here’s what reviewers are saying about her story:

“A hoot.”–Bellingham Herald
“Really clever concept…reminded of Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series.–“Bookworm 1858
“Hilariously imaginative”—The Librarian Next Door
“A brilliant, totally surprising story a la Alice in Wonderland meets Law and Order: Special Austen Unit.”—Novel Travelist
“Playful…tongue in cheek…too smart for words!”–One Literature Nut
